Product Description
Ancient Latin and Greek live on in the words we speak every day. Introduce your students to the fun and challenge of word genealogy with Words on the Vine, a 36-unit vocabulary program based on common Latin and Greek roots that will provide you with a framework for an entire school year. Each unit introduces ten related words and shows how their definitions can be traced back to a common meaning. Students first examine each word in context to understand its correct usage. Then they have the opportunity to put the words to work for themselves in creative and challenging assignments. Each unit provides easy-to-remember visual clues, fun-to-read usage examples, and hands-on activities

Teaching starts at home  Oct 5, 2008
My 5th grader loves vocabulary and has always been above his grade level. I have noticed that it is sometimes harder to find ways to increase his vocabulary. This workbook is great, it teaches the Greek/Latin root words and combined with his already great vocabulary he sees the connection with words. I work at a University and know the importance of what is required for him as he progresses in his academic career. This workbook doesn't "push" him, it just opens up gread discussions in our home and makes the dictionary a bit more of a friend!

Working well with high schoolers, too!!  Sep 19, 2008
I took a chance and decided to use this workbook as bellringers for my 10th and 11th grade English students. It's worked out very well. Many of the words are new to their vocabulary and the kids learn how to use root words to decipher meanings of new words. We go through one unit each week and have a quiz, which they write themselves, every two weeks. I've always struggled to find a good way to incorporate new vocabulary into my daily lesson plans and this has worked great for me so far.

Great intro to Word Roots  Apr 25, 2008
I love this book! I have used it with 3 of my children so far and plan next year to use it wth my youngest. Each of the 36 lessons has 3 activity sheets plus suggestions for further activities. There are a couple of levels of activities, so you could easily return to the book later and do the harder ones as review. In addition, each lesson has other words listed that also share the root, so it would allow for additional work if you wanted to spread out the book over 2 years or use later again. My only complaint, which another reviewer mentioned, is that there is not a Words on the Vine 2-that is a real cirme!
